Ever wondered how our school logo was chosen?
Well, it was between two choices, the phoenix and the wolf. The decision process took place during the current senior class’s freshman year, when the school had just opened. At one point, a student decided to combine the two logos, creating the logo we have now, the Firewolf. It took them about 9 months to come up with our mascot, according to Mr. Saba, the Head of School of Samueli Academy. Like many things at Samueli, the voting was held on a Google doc, and most students chose the Firewolf. They even had a second vote at a Town Hall because some of the students felt cheated, and, once again, the Firewolves won.
The design was made by P11, a design company in Irvine Ave, who got some ideas from the school to incorporate the phoenix as well. That’s why you can see a phoenix on the wolf’s face. The colors of the logo were also voted on by the students. “The Firewolf? Yeah, I think it's awesome. Its unique, it's probably the only one in the country, and the students came up with it, ... I love it,” stated Mr. Saba.
He's not the only one that likes it. Almost everyone in school does as well, including staff members. Like Mr. Polizzi, who is an engineering teacher at the school. He states that,” Nothing is cooler than a Firewolf.” In his Advisory class, he was helping students come up with their own logo for the school. Students also had to state why their design was the best to be the logo. Mr. Polizzi had also mentioned that,” I bought the t-shirt and the jacket with the Firewolf logo on it, and sometimes I would even go to the store with it… proud to be wearing it.”
There is also another staff member that feels the same way, his name is Mr. Kalbhenn, who is a P.E teacher. He is a really big fan of the school’s logo, he and claimed that Mr.Sheppard was the one who came up with the “phoenix.” Just like the other Advisory teachers, he also helped students come up with ideas for their logos. He said that,”What I don’t like about it is that we don’t have an actual mascot. I mean the logo is great, but we should start to look into an actual costume… that can go to our games and really show the energy and the school pride we have.”
As you all know, Seniors were the ones who voted, such as Violeta Vega, our school’s ASB president. She claimed that, “I actually like it, it’s completely different, and it’s a mix of two really cool animals.” However, she then stated that she voted for the “phoenix.” Violeta said that she doesn’t really like the color orange on the logo, but she is getting use to it.
She believes that the Firewolf logo, “represents unity and a new beginning because that’s what our school is, and we’re trying to keep everything together.”
