And the Prince and Princess is… This year Samueli Academy had their first Winter Formal.
It was held at Segerstrom Center for the Arts. The school decided to incorporate the idea of royalty. There was a Prince and Princess elected for junior, Duke and Duchess elected for the sophomores, and Lord and Lady for freshman.
These students were elected from teachers and they had the option to run or not. Teachers being able to choose candidates for royalty made the students feel honored. Moises Marquez said, “I felt flattered knowing that a teacher depicted me as an appropriate candidate for royalty, I would have never suspected to be in royalty and for someone else to chose me, it gives me a different point of view of myself and it boosted my self esteem.” They had the opportunity to promote themselves by putting up posters or getting the word out on social media. The winners were announced during Winter Formal. Mitch Hatz won for Prince and Violeta Vega won for Princess. Violeta Vega said,
“Being elected princess was amazing! I was running against great people and honestly I didn’t think I would win. But I have to admit that it was surprising, it felt pretty cool to have a tiara placed on my head by another princess (Ms.Bilderback). I am extremely grateful for all those who voted for me, being elected the first princess made that night 10x more memorable.”
Mitch Hatz said, “I felt shocked and excited because people thought of me as worthy enough to be prince, I was honored.” Manny Mejia won for Duke and Cynthia Antuche won for Duchess. Alfredo Mar won Lord and Kennedy Polanco for Lady. Kennedy Polanco said,
“I felt happy, I never thought I would get chosen because I saw that someone was campaigning more than me.” After the winners were announced they danced to a slow song to end the night.
