Celebrities walk among us, day and night. Ms. Somoza, our very own math teacher here at Samueli Academy, is a very talented woman that has the gift to become a famous celebrity. She has been singing her whole life and adores it.
Ms. Somoza started her singing career in Spanish. She grew up not knowing how to speak the language, but she learned how to sing in Spanish before she ever sang in English. She is our very own “Selena.” She stated “I started to sing when I was 4 years old in a Spanish church,” and has been singing ever since. She has grown both: mentally and physically into a young and talented woman.
Ms. Somoza has been performing and auditioning throughout her singing career. She has sung at church, school, football games, and at her very own high school and college graduations. She had the privilege of singing the National Anthem in front of more than 13,000 people when she graduated from UC Santa Barbara. She has also put herself out there and auditioned for American Idol and The Voice. Even though she didn't make it far, she is very driven to keep on trying. Her plan is to audition again for The Voice or American Idol this summer.
Furthermore, Ms. Somoza’s family members also have talent. She stated, “My talent comes from my dad because he is a musician and also sings.” She also stated, “My grandpa, who passed away before I was born, was also a singer, so I guess I get it from him, as well.” Ms.Somoza currently sings with her 9-year-old niece, Mariah Lewis. Talent just seems to run through every generation in Ms. Somoza’s family.
Although Ms. Somoza is very musically-gifted, singing isn’t her only hobby. Unlike other celebrities, Ms. Somoza is very athletic. She has established that she loves playing all kinds of sports. For instance, she can play softball, football, and basketball. Basketball is one of her favorite sports. In addition, she loves to teach math. She even considers herself a “nerd,” because numbers excite her. Although she loves math, she loves it, even more, when she sees her students enjoying math and truly learning. She said, “It’s amazing when you see that light bulb turn on, and everything finally makes sense to a student.” Besides teaching, Ms. Somoza stated that she also loves hanging out with her students and getting to know them outside of the classroom. She said, “My students are very interesting. I love that they really open up to me. Sometimes, they tell me more about themselves than I wanted to know.”
Students feel that Ms. Somoza is “talented, funny, chill, and all of the above.” Samantha Alvarado stated, “Ms. Somoza is very inspirational to others, and she is also a role model.” In addition, Christopher Garcia also stated, “She is my favorite teacher. I really love her voice and how she gets along with students including myself.”
So now you know a little more about Ms. Somoza behind the scenes. She is not only a math teacher but a singer, athlete, friend, and role model to her students. She dedicates so much time to her students in and out of the classroom, and yet still makes time for her passions.
