Samueli Academy requires its students to complete an internship before graduating. But with the immense workload that students will get such as finishing portfolios, preparing for interviews, and the work schedule; many won't see the point behind it all. However, if you were to look closely you will end up seeing that there are many benefits of doing them.
Come November, the first applications will be due for students who want to pick their internships first. This deadline is important for those who want a specific internship they want to do in a certain field. So any Sophomores who want a good internship will want to think about what field they will want to go to. “I recommend that [the sophomores] start narrowing down possible career opportunities,” said Mitch Hatz, a junior. You not only have to choose the internship that best suits you, you will also have to fill out applications and do interviews at the company you chose.
However difficult it may seem all this hard work is worth it at the end. It will show that you are responsible enough to work when the time comes. “You have to do a lot of work ahead of time to make sure you are ready for not only internships, but a career that you decide to do,” said Ms. Nyree, work based learning director. You will acquire skills you will be able to use when you are an adult.
“I think that students will get a lot of experience out of it,” said Aaron Moranco, another Junior “They can use these skills that they receive to help them later in life.” These internships will be a window into the real world when you have to have a full time job, possibly in a company similar to the one you had an internship at.
With all this in mind, Juniors should start adding the finishing touches to their portfolios and Sophomores will have to start thinking about their interest. Even with the long road ahead of them Juniors will see that all of this with help them in the future.
