Jonathan Gunther is a History teacher at Samueli Academy High School. He loves to travel and look for cool experiences.
He also loves hiking, reading, and playing board games and role playing games. He comes from a family of teachers and civil servants and had a great childhood and supportive family. “It was idyllic.” Gunther states. Hr went to Sonora High School in La Habra, CA. And later went to Cal State Fullerton for his Bachelor's in History and teaching credential. He describes himself as his favorite Pokemon from the cartoon which is a Psyduck. He says they remind him of himself because he is always confused, kind of has a headache, somehow comes through and saves the day for everyone and then goes back to being totally oblivious.
You may have seen Mr. Gunther pop up in your emails with fun field trips to art museums. Why are you getting these emails? According to Gunther, “Since I moved to Samueli Academy from my old school, I was looking for something I could do to share my unique perspective with kids. I finally realized that we have vans and that kids are pre-cleared for field trips so I decided to share my love of art and urban exploring.” He believes that kids should be allowed to have a positive experience with an adult who cares and is not getting paid and that it sends a strong positive message to the kid, that they have value and they can trust people.
What goes on at these adventures? Gunther says that during the trips he tries to blend three elements. “A visit to an art museum, an instagrammable location, and a new food experience. I just want kids to see how many cool interesting things are in the world. New types of stimulation help young minds develop so my goal isn't for kids to learn anything specific, just for kids to have memorable experiences and fun.”
Gunther has taken his students to various locations such as the Hammer, the Fowler, the Broad and the Getty Villa. He has some plans in store to visit LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Getty Center, the Norton Simon, MOCA (The Museum of Contemporary Arts) , Exposition Park, and Balboa Park in San Diego. “I also have tentative ideas for Instagram spots and interesting food stops near all of those locations, as well as a few strolls on nearby college campuses.” says Gunther.
He really loves to travel and wander around which could explain why he loves to visit and go to all of these places. He loves to travel to new places and plans to visit places that have natural beauty and rich human history and culture, “So pretty much everywhere” He says. “In ten years I see myself teaching history in Western Ireland, travelling to various parts of Europe and maybe buying a small apartment near the water in Catalonia for the Winter.” Maybe you’ll see him there?
