“A total of 19 shootings have occurred on school campuses across the United States as of March 2.” Not only is this number increasing as the year progresses, but it is causing more controversy over gun control. Should the U.S ban all guns? Should teachers carry weapons with them during class? Should there be more of a background check in order to buy a gun? How would a teenager get a hold of a gun? These are all questions that are surfacing more and more as more school shootings occur.
A student who chooses to kill their peers using a gun, not only affects the students/teachers who die and get injured but their families and friends. According to a Union Leader article Nick Kruse states, “It's a little unbelievable," he said. "You see it on TV and you think: This won't happen to us; this won't happen nearby. When it actually does, it doesn't feel real.” after the Parkland school shooting took place. Nick did not expect to witness this gruesome event. He can’t imagine how difficult it’s going to be to go back to school, and not see everyone there because they passed away.
“A person must be at least 18 years of age to purchase a rifle or shotgun (pistol grip is 21). To buy a handgun, a person must be at least 21 years of age.” In the U.S, guns are easy to purchase. You can easily order a gun online or purchase one at your local Walmart. Once you turn 18 you are of age to buy a rifle or shotgun, and when you turn 21 you can purchase a handgun. Purchasing an unbuilt rifle, shotgun, or handgun is also very easy because there are websites such as eBay, and Craigslist. There is no law requiring you to be a certain age when purchasing an unbuilt gun. This can be a way that a teenager can ahold of a deadly weapon. Another way is if a parent has one in their house that the teenager can easily get access to.
School lockdown drills have been drilled into our heads ever since elementary school. Enrique Mendoza, a sophomore here at Samueli knows exactly what to do during a lockdown because he stated, “Duck, and cover and you lock the door”. There’s no doubt that students know what to do during a lockdown, but how does a lockdown come in handy when someone is shooting on campus? When you duck, and cover, as well as lock the door you, stay out of sight from the shooter. This can make the situation safer. Here at Samueli Academy we prepare by “[Having] a plan, we have to submit it to the OCDEU, our active shooter plan, we practice it as well as the lockdown drill” stated, principal Mr. Saba. This does, in fact, make us more prepared if a situation like this ever occurs here on campus.
With all the controversy surrounding gun control, there are some claims that teachers should be armed. Samueli Academy’s principal Mr. Saba states, “I don’t think the answer to stopping violence is to have more violence” when asked if staff or teachers should carry weapons such as guns. While others might want teachers to be armed so that they can defend students. This debate only surfaced because of the Parkland shooting in Florida as well as the other 18 shooting that has happened since March 2, 2018.
To conclude guns can be used for the greater good, or be used in a bad way. It depends on the person who is using the gun. Since there have been so many shootings this year, a lot of controversies has surfaced about gun control as well as, should teachers carry guns.
