“I don't design clothes, I design dreams-Ralph Lauren” Here at Samueli Academy, we offer students the option to take a design or engineering pathway. How many times have you heard of a school that does that?
Freshman year of a student's high school journey, students get to experience both engineering and design, which are introductory classes that help them get prepared to make a very tough decision their sophomore year. The decision being, “Which one will you choose, engineering or design.” And although engineering is a great pathway to choose, Design offers students the ability to express their creativity through art, videoography, photoshop, and etc.
“I would recommend design if you are a very visual person, if you like to be imaginative, if you like to draw, and are interested in video production,” says the Junior and sophomore design teacher, Mr.Cheng. Design provides students a lot of different choices throughout the course. It is not just a design course of a specific things, but of various different activities. An example of the activities in this course are painting shapes, video production, acting, script and dialogue, computer design, and fashion design. Even though design might seem very easy, there are challenges to the class. “I would take design if you like to be challenged and have tasks that are unfamiliar to you, but require you to think,” explains Mr.Cheng.
Design is a different course from many people, to some people is might be new and unfamiliar. But although it might seem or sound easy, there is always work that needs to be done and dedication to the class. One example, is the project in which students have to paint a fruit, the project might seem easy, but in reality there's a lot of work put into the painting. "In art, you have to add dimensions and shadows to the piece of fruit, it is not as easy as it sounds,” explains Ivanery Jimenez, junior at Samueli Academy.
To help freshmen prepare to make their final decision, sophomores and juniors were interviewed on why they chose design over engineering. Although it might not seem like it, their opinion really affects the way that freshmen will chose their future classes. Like for example, if they hear that design is the best class that the sophomores and juniors have very taken in their lives, the probability of them being convinced is higher.
When interviewing these students, there were a lot of positive things said about both careers. “I chose design because I see a more of an artistic feel, rather than building,” says Bianca Mendoza, Junior, “ I like the visualization.” Design is defined to be a plan or drawing produced to show the look and function or workings of a building, garment, or other object before it is built or made, where engineering is defined to be the branch of science and technology concerned with the design, building, and use of engines, machines, and structures. The reason why Design is more convenient to some people, is because there is not math or equations involved. “If you don't like math, don’t go to engineering,” says Bianca Mendoza, giggling. The only “equation” that design requires is creativity and inspiration. The reason why design may require creativity is because the design class does a lot of project that may require you to use your mind.
A project that seemed to be very memorable to many students is the Ducks t-shirt design. In that project, design students were required to design a t-shirt or any piece of clothing in pairs of two. They were then evaluated by Ducks' executives. The executives later chose their top favorites from the class. Those who were chosen, got their design sold in Ducks' clothing stores and online. Because the design class has a great partnership with the Ducks team, there are a lot of opportunities for the students to attend Ducks games. This shows that students can collaborate with their classmates to create one amazing project final. During collaboration time, students get to learn new things about the project and about each other. Last year, I was part of the design class, and also participated in this project. It was a great experience because my partner and I won. We designed a Ducks hat. It is amazing to think that the hat that I designed was being sold in store and that people are wearing it around the world.
“My favorite part of design is Mr.Cheng calling me Ozzy and drawing.” In design you not only get to learn about art and express yourselves, but you also get to grow a personal connection and bond with Mr.Cheng. There are many ways in which students connect with Mr.Cheng, for example, many students share the love of batman with him.
In the first year of attending Samueli Academy, freshmen get to take both engineering and design courses. “I think that the fact that I have experience in both, and learning the basics,” explains Saul Estrada, freshmen,“ I get to experience a little taste of what each one is going to be.” It is important to get a basic understanding of both classes in order to make up your mind. Yes, there is something positive to both courses, but they are far from being the same.
“Im affected by this change because, some of my friends are doing engineering but I then I thought of myself first, so I chose design because it was going to benefit me.” explains Leslie Perfecto, freshmen. In high school, it is very easy to get influenced by friends, but it's important to keep in mind that whether you chose design or engineering, you're going to have to enjoy it because it will be a class that is going to be taken for the next three years of high school.
Design gives you the opportunity to express yourself through crafts and many different ways, and although choosing a career seems very difficult, design will not be a mistake.
