Comic-Con Week

It's a bird! It's a plane! It's Superman! And Batman, and Harley Quinn, and many more!

From Tuesday through Thursday, Samueli Academy students participated in Comic-Con week by dressing up. Tuesday was designated superhero day, Wednesday cartoon day, and Thursday villain day.

Comic-Con week was coordinated by ASB in order to elevate school spirit that has been found lacking at Samueli.  “We heard a lot of people were interested in that kind of thing,” said Gwen Martin, an ASB member. It had been in the talks for a few weeks only before the idea was mentioned officially at Town Hall.

Although creating school spirit was the purpose, Martin admitted that the idea didn’t work as well as they hoped so. “A lot of people just didn’t have the type of clothing,” she said.

“I do not have any outfits related to comic-con,” said Brenda Montes, a Junior.

Ms. Ruff, a Math teacher, also felt similarly, saying that she “went out on monday night and couldn’t find a costume.”

Not enough students or teachers participated in the event, according to a teacher and fellow students. “Not very many people dressed up,” said Ms. Ruff.

“I feel like we just barely did a dress up day I tried to participate in,” said Ms. Ruff. There was a dress up day earlier in the year, actually, so overload might of been another factor that stopped the event from gaining traction.

Although dressing up days are usually a cause of concern because of the distraction they may cause, the lack of participation stopped that from happening.

“I haven’t seen people with costumes in class,” said Nadia Serrano.

Overall, while it wasn’t as grand as expected or hoped for but it was still successful in it’s own way. “I feel like it did create school spirit because it encouraged people to come out of their comfort zone,” said Alex Flores, Junior.

Throughout the week there were teachers and students participating in this spirit week.

Mrs. Riha, an English teacher, had her room adorned with old Superman comics to celebrate in her own way as well as a Superman shirt to match. Mr. Gunther took wednesday as an opportunity to be Finn the Human from the Cartoon Network show Adventure Time.

Superman and Batman were very popular choices, and a Batman squad can be seen in Samueli Academy’s Instagram.
