In this nation, schools are expected to be a safe environment for students and teachers, however, at times, unexpected acts of violence or injuries occur. Of course, when this does happen, it leaves many parents, communities, and schools concerned and worried about their children’s safety.
Over the years, we have seen many school tragedies involving the safety of students, this has also been an issue of the past. In fact, in April 20, 1999, there was a massacre at Columbine High School, caused by two teens. This took place in Littleton, Colorado when two students, wearing trench coats, had set off a homemade bomb. After, they went on a murderous rampage, ending the lives of 15 people including the perpetrators. As well as leaving 20 people wounded. According to History, “The crime was the worst high school shooting in U.S. history,” and also stated that it, “prompted a national debate on gun control and school safety.”
Undoubtedly, the Columbine massacre left many people concerned, and questioning the safety of students at school. Due to this tragedy, many safety measures were taken into consideration. One the solutions they mentioned includes making smaller high schools to prevent this from happening. “One component of this complex problem is that most high schools are too large to create a personal environment. School districts build large high schools or consolidate schools to create even larger schools,” mentions Education World. In fact, many experts now say that small high schools with about 600 students or less are much better for the students.
A great example of a small high school would be, none other than, Samueli Academy. “I think that we benefit from having a small high school, since like we know almost everyone, which makes it a better and safer environment,” comments Catherine Nguyen. Does that mean that the students really feel safe?
Evelyn Gonzalez, freshman, says, “ Yes, I do feel safe at school, since there are many stuff that we have that makes me feel secure, like the cameras, fence, and other stuff.” Another student, Bianca Carino, agrees by stating, “ I think that the school does a good job in ensuring the safety of the students by having campus supervisors, cameras, and many other important stuff. As a student, I do feel secure.”
