The Super Bowl is the country’s biggest sporting event of the year. Millions of people sit on the couch and turn on the TV and watch America’s favorite game. The intensity and excitement are only some words that describe how the Super Bowl is every year, but overall, everybody has a good time. As the National Football Association gets money from our views, us the fans scream and cheer on for our favorite team and eat a lot of pizza, a lot of pizza. Super Bowl LI took place Feb. 5th, 2017 at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas. “It was a good match up between Atlanta’s offense and New England’s defense,” said Samueli Student Jose Cantu.
The first Super was Jan. 15, 1967 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. It was between the Green Bay Packers and The Kansas City Chiefs. The Packers won the game 35-10 as they took the first NFL Championship trophy (Now called the Lombardi Trophy). Ever since, the Super Bowl has really never changed. The rules haven’t really changed, just only some safety measures were updated and the games aren’t always in Pasadena and Los Angeles anymore. The have been 51 Super Bowls, with the recent one being against the New England Patriots and the Atlanta Falcons. Noah Palacios, a Samueli Academy English Teacher, said “The Super Bowl has never changed, just the prices for the commercials have gotten higher.” A 30 second commercial in the Super Bowl cost as much as five million dollars.
Super Bowl 51 was the most recent and one of the most exciting Super Bowls in recent memory. The Patriots were down 28-3 in the third quarter, and according to ESPN’s FPI (Football Power Index), the Falcons had a 99.7% of winning the game at that point. Then the 4th quarter came, Tom Brady as being one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time, pulled of one of the largest comebacks in Super Bowl history. The Patriots tied the game up 28-28 with a Danny Amendola two point conversion and the game went into overtime (The first overtime in Super Bowl History). “I knew the Patriots could pull it off, you have Tom Brady at Quarterback and I knew he wouldn’t leave without a fight,” said Noah Palacios, Samueli english teacher. The Patriots won the coin toss and would eventually win the game 34-28. Tom Brady won Super Bowl LI MVP as he had 446 passing yard and two touchdowns. He pulled of a miracle for the Boston fans, and fans around the world.
In conclusion, why is the Super Bowl so popular? The Super Bowl is one of the biggest sporting events in the year, and even though you’re not a really big fan of football, you will still find a way to watch it. Football is one of america’s greatest sports to watch, and watching a classic game of pigskin with a taste of Lombardi Trophy will always be a fun time.
