Get to know the mastermind behind the boy's new volleyball season, as coach Henry shares a bit about himself and his team.
“Volleyball is one of the best and [most] challenging sports ever,” stated freshman Christopher Garcia. Many students feel the same way. So as the winter sports season came to an end, the spring season began. Tryouts for the boys varsity and JV teams were held from February 9th to the 14th. By February 14th, Henry Pena, the varsity volleyball coach, and his assistant coach, Flavio, had chosen the players they deemed best fit for the the team.
Coach Henry has been playing the competitive and fun sport that is volleyball for 13 years now. His love for the game lead him to coaching the sport nine years ago, and the 2018 Firewolve’s will be the 14th team he has coached in his career. Coach Henry said, “I have plenty of experience under my belt,” and also stated that he will never stop learning, growing and playing this challenging sport. Even though he is a very experienced coach, Coach Henry hasn’t lost his love for the game, describing himself as still “Passionate!”
The volleyball season is about to begin and with the teams set in place, Coach Henry sees his teams as groups of kids who are motivated to learn the concepts of volleyball. Adding they are individuals who want to win and learn the skills of volleyball to get there.
Even the volleyball players think that this new team is going to reach their potential. Christopher Garcia the JV captain said “I think my new teammates are going to put all their effort and so would I.”
“My team means alot to me,” stated Coach Henry. Many coaches feel similarly towards their teams, but Coach Henry desires for more than his team to just gain a further understanding of the sport. Beyond that he wants them to learn responsibility, respect, and passion. That drives him to keep pushing his team for success.
On the team there is a varied amount of experience. For instance, Coach Henry said “I had 6 seniors that played for me last year. Seniors that had two years of experience with me, in the sport. Seniors that had understood the game. This year, I have a lot new kids that haven’t played volleyball in the past,” which makes this year a “construction” year for the team. In other words, a year where the team is focusing on learning and growing as players.
Persistent, Passionate, and Interesting are the three words Henry used while describing his team. Persistent was chosen because volleyball is a sport where we’re allowed to make mistakes so that we can grow. Passionate was chosen because this year this team has this passion to learn the sport of volleyball. The final word that he describes this team is interesting. The reason why he chose interesting is because he felt that this team is different from his past teams.
Coach Henry is very humble and kind to others. He is very experienced in the sport of volleyball, but there is more to him than that. The volleyball players are very happy to have this amazing coach. Carlos and Christopher, players on the team were in agreement when describing their coach they said “Coach Henry is amazing and the [best] coach.”
