“On your mark… get set.. GOOO!”
As the new semester began, a new season of track and field started. Newcomers and experienced runners were introduced to new coaches, ran new afterschool practice routines, and decided on their event.
Although its still preseason and the sport actually begins mid-February, runners are already getting ready for their first meet by practicing on and off campus. This season there are four captains: Joshua Gutierrez, Brandon Mejia, Maritza Ibarra, and Cassidy Bayron. The new coaches are Alyssa Garcia, Moises Marquez, and Ricky.
As a runner, students have to attend after-school practice, where they are “racing the sun” essentially trying to get through practice before darkness arrives. These practices allow students to be separated based on their distance and run their amount of meters per day. Maritza Ibarra, freshman and JV captain, is a sprinter. She has to run at a certain pace to reach a certain time, and over a shorter distance, in order to improve her speed before any race. She is expected to run a 100m or 200m for her event. Maritza says, It was a harder transition to go from cross country, which relies on mostly endurance to track, which relieves more on speed. However, I am very excited to see myself improve during the season”.
Along with new runners, came new coaches. Coach Alyssa is in charge of mid-distance and has had 13+ experience in Track. Coach Ricky is in charge of the sprinter and is an experienced runner. Coach Moises is a Samueli Alumni runner and coaches over the distance runners. Their coaching is pushed runners to get better and learn new techniques. “At each practice, I learn how to stride longer, improve my “NEMO” fin, and fasten my pace. I really enjoy how each coach pushes me to overcome any challenges.”
Track and field already have supporters cheering on the team. Diana Marquez said she could not join the sport due to time management. However, she gives her full encouragement an applause to the runners. She says, “I want the best for our team and show that Samueli can kick butt”.
Track and Field have begun and the season looks hopeful. Students still have time to join and run before the next meet. The team’s first meet is on February 24th. If possible please check it out!!
