The opening game of the NBA season, Boston Celtics versus the Cleveland Cavaliers went forward with its share of controversy. Kyrie Irving, now a point guard for the Celtics was facing his former team, the Cavs after his notable request to be traded. In addition LeBron James, forward for the Cavaliers and former teammate has spoken out against Kyrie’s trade request. Along with the controversy, the opening game was not free of injury. Gordon Hayward, while attempting to catch a lob by Kyrie, fractured his ankle. The timing of the injury and the loss of Hayward on the court hurt the Celtics, resulting in the final score, 102 to 99 gave the Cavaliers the victory.
Controversy lingers on the west coast as well. Last season, the Golden State Warriors won the championship and did not attend the customary visit to the White House. President Trump revoked the invitation in a tweet stating, ”Going to the White House is considered a great honor for a championship team. Stephen Curry is hesitating, therefore invitation is withdrawn” The President’s tweet brought much outrage with the players and the head commissioner, Adam Silver. Silver responded with, “I was in favor of the team visiting the White House and thought it was a rare opportunity for these players to share their views directly with the President. I am disappointed that this will not happen. More importantly, I am proud of our players for taking an active role in their communities and continuing to speak out on critically important issues.”. Stephen Curry’s decision garnered support from other players, even those playing for opposing teams.
Fans and commentators continue to focus on Kyrie Irving’s trade, as well as rookie, Lonzo Ball. Speculation surrounds Ball, playing for the Los Angeles Lakers. The big question is, will he be awarded Rookie of the Year? Over the summer, there were a lot of eyes on the 2017 NBA Draft because of Lonzo Ball, and the hopes of the Los Angeles Lakers drafting him. Lonzo Ball began to be known in his high school years at Chino Hills, and then later in college playing for UCLA. Lonzo’s father, Lavar Ball is quoted as stating that his son, Lonzo is better than two-time MVP Stephen Curry. The Lakers, with their new rookie, Lonzo won the Summer League, and Lonzo won the Summer League MVP.
