After a long wait for soccer season, it is finally here! Our firewolf boys joined our new coach for the first day of tryouts on October 15,2015. It was very exciting to see the field filled with boys ready to work hard who are inspired to play the sport.
Last season, the Junior Varsity boys showed their excellent skills on the field and went undefeated for several games. Because they were very successful, this year Samueli Academy decided to have a varsity team as well.
“I look in a boy that has the skills to play the position he is trying out for”, says Coach “aside from the experience, I look for someone who has the heart and desire to go out there and give it 100 percent.” The tryouts this season sure will be challenging, but it is very important to give it your 100 percent and demonstrate that you have the capacity to be on the team.
Samueli Academy has several boys who are hoping to join the team, and some have been playing soccer since they were little kids. For example, Sebastian Beltran, junior at Samueli Academy, says,“ I have played soccer for a while now and I have played on multiple soccer clubs so I am hoping to make Varsity and carry the team to a good place this season.”
When trying out for a sport or any other competition, it is important to have a positive mindset. If you have this mindset you might actually make the team. It has been proven that positive thoughts help you achieve your goals. As read on Huffpost Healthy Living, Fredrickson tested positive emotions by conducting an experiment where she divided people into 5 groups and showed them different parts of a movie. The people who saw pictures of fear and anger were less able to come up with solutions to the problems faced by the characters than the people who saw clips of joy, who wrote down more actions they would take. It shows that when you have a positive mindset and you are surrounded with joy and have positive emotions, you will see more possibilities in your life. It is important to set goals for yourself and reach for what you think you are capable of.
Being a part of a sport not only allows you play the sport you love to do, but also can be a very helpful way of reducing stress and help your well being. “I like soccer because it is a way of letting out my stress and interacting with my teammates,” said Ivan Mendoza. “I like to set goals for myself and, in this case, I could actually make a goal.” Students have a very high stress rate due to homework, projects, even social groups. Being a part of a sport helps release stress, because athletes aren't focused on any other things, but the sport when playing.
“There is a lot of good players out there, a lot of talent; it should make my job much easier to choose the varsity roster,” said the Coach of the soccer team. Soccer tryout are definitely going to be tough this year due to the fact that there will be two teams this year, but it should not be as challenging if you walk onto the field with a high and positive mindset.
