Cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, and real pumpkin pie spices atop whipped cream is where it’s at for most people in the fall. The Pumpkin Spice Latte (commonly abbreviated PSL) beat out the Salted Caramel Mocha and the new Toasted Graham Latte as the fan-favorite Starbucks fall drink.
In fact, it’s the top seasonal drink as well, according to HuffingtonPost, beating out winter drinks Eggnog Latte, Caramel Brulee Latte, Christmas Cookie Latte, Gingerbread Latte, Peppermint Mocha, Chestnut Praline Latte, and Toffee Nut Latte. In fact, the PSL was introduced after the Eggnog Latte, 27 years later, yet it drew forward as a relative newcomer.
Starbucks’ own website acknowledges the drink as their “most popular seasonal beverage of all time”. Peter Dukes, the director of Espresso and Brewed Coffee for Starbucks, associated this win for the PSL to the taste of the drink. “It tastes just like fall,” he said, in August of this year.
Samueli students attributed to popularity of PSL to the pumpkin in the name and drink. “Because it’s pumpkin. It represents autumn,” said Alex Flores, Junior. Similarly, Leslie Mateo, Junior, mentioned the correlation between pumpkins and Halloween.
“I tried it once and it was pretty good. I’m craving it right now,” said Flores.
On the other side, however, Lizbeth Martinez, Junior, said, ”I don’t find the point of pumpkin spice latte because you don’t even taste the pumpkin.” She thought the Toasted Graham Latte sounded the most appealing. Haters gonna hate.
The overall popularity of the drink is undeniable, though, despite a few stray opinions. There’s even a Twitter for the drink, created by Starbucks. It currently has 121 thousand followers.
No other fall drink, or seasonal drink for that matter, can say that.
