By: Anahi Ventura This year’s presidential election has arguably been one of the most surprising and most intense presidential elections in the history of the U.S. Polls confirmed multiple times that Hillary would win this year’s presidential election, but as we know that wasn't true. For many people it was a night of horror, and for others it was the best day of their lives. With cheers and applauses, Donald Trump accepted his presidential election at 3AM EST, November 9th. His face was filled with pride and gratitude towards all the people that supported him. Trump’s shocking victory to the presidency has brought out the bad side of many people, and it made us realize that our country is still very divided. Many people were ready to make history with Hillary Clinton as president and with polls stating this to be true, it was pretty shocking when Donald Trump won. Many celebrities were endorsing Hillary Clinton and made sure their fans were aware they voted for her. After the elections, celebrities were pretty vocal about their distaste of the new president that was elected. For example, Lady Gaga held a protest right after finding out he was elected as president. She held a “Love Trumps Hate” sign right outside the Trump Tower. In fact, Brisa Garcia, a freshman, said, “Honestly I thought Hillary was gonna win, since she had more celebrity supporters.”
Donald Trump’s race to the White House was pretty unpredictable, since you never knew what he was thinking or what he was going to say. In other words, his campaign was very controversial, from insulting Mexicans to accusations of assaulting women. The immense amount of hate he received didn’t stop him from running, and eventually winning the election. Ana Guillen, a supervisor at Samueli, mentions, “He has a lot of good points, but once he uses his hate words he loses his validity.” Many people were unsure of who they were going to vote for in this election. They thought, or believed, that neither of the candidates were the best choice to run the country. For one, many people didn't trust Hillary Clinton because they believed she was a liar and would lead to corruption, while others didn't want to vote for Donald Trump because they believed most of the comments he made were racist. So, that led people to believe they had to choose between the lesser of two evils. Allison Jimenez, a freshman, stated, “If I had the chance to vote for this election I would've gone for Trump because Hillary is a liar and I don't trust her... but the person I wanted to be president from the beginning was Bernie Sanders.” While, Lucero Matias, a registered voter, said, “I voted for Hillary Clinton because I agreed on the stuff she stood up for, unlike Donald Trump that was against everything I stand for.” Whether you're a Clinton or Bernie supporter, or a third party candidate supporter, we have to accept the fact that Donald Trump is going to be our 45th President of the United States. People might be scared to what our future may look like, but like Hillary Clinton said, “We owe him an open mind, and the chance to lead.” Who knows? Maybe he will “Make America Great Again.”
