After 248 episodes, 1,015 myths, 83 miles of duct tape, and 900 explosions, the Discovery Channel series Mythbusters created by Peter Rees is coming to a halt.
Mythbusters has been on television since 2003 and has made families come back and watch again and again. The series has convinced many children to go into science and engineering fields. Some iconic episodes have even saved people’s lives.
Mythbusters began on January 23, 2003 with its back to back two pilot episodes. The first episode gets into action by testing the myths: Can a Car Take Off with JATO Rockets and Can Pop Rocks and Soda Cause a Stomach to Rupture. This first episode was the first appearance of Jamie Hyneman, 59 and Adam Savage, 48. Jamie Hyneman is the CEO of M5 Industries, which is a special effects company, and was a co-host on Mythbusters. Adam Savage is a industrial designer, special effects fabricator, and co-host of Mythbusters and Tested.com.
The next episode was “Biscuit Bazooka” which was the myth if a biscuit can explode in a hot car? While testing this we see the first appearance of Kari Byron, 41. Kari Byron was part of Mythbusters and hosted several mini series such as Thrill Factor, Head Rush, and Pumpkin Chunkin. She has a seven year old daughter named Stella Ruby.
After the pilots, Season 1 began with crazy myths such as: Can You Die from a Penny Falling from the Empire State Building, Can a Cell Phone Cause an Explosion from a Gas Leak, and How Long Can You Survive In a Coffin? This first season was the first appearance of the iconic crash test dummy Buster! The dummy was introduced on September 23, 2003. Buster was used for myths that required to record the g-force of an impact or was just used for the fun of watching him get destroyed. Adam loved to taunt and beat up Buster. Buster also had a family of dummies, which were called Simulaids. The Simulaids were named Ted or Rescue Randy (Dad), Jane (Mom), Suzy (sister), and the Unnamed son (brother). Buster’s family was used to simulate myths that required a given age and gender such as the myth if a little girl can make a full circle on a swing. Since Buster is designed to simulate a middle aged man he would not work for this myth.
The second season brought new ideas to the Mythbusters. Such as how they began their myth revisit episodes on June 8, 2004. On this revisit episode we see the first appearance of Tory Belleci, 45. Tory appeared on Mythbusters with his knowledge of filmmaking and model making. After appearing on Mythbusters he began to co-host for Thrill Factor and Pumpkin Chunkin. He has a web series called Blow It Up, which you guessed it, he blows things up! Also, Tory insisted into helping orphans in Haiti by providing clean water. Season 2 brought famous myths such as the Ming Dynasty Astronaut and the Sinking Titanic. This was the first season to start the viewer myth choice and a Christmas Special.
Season 3 brought specials, movie myths, and chaos. The first episode of this season was the revival of Buster! The Dummy had to be restored because of all the beatings he got from Season 1 and 2. This season was the first appearance of Grant Imahara, 45. He was shown working on the episode, “Hollywood on Trial”, May 11, 2005. “Hollywood on Trial” was a fan request to test scenes from movies. Grant Imahara was an electrical expert, radio controller, and an engineer. He has also appeared on Battlebots as a host and a competitor. Some movie myths were the Jaws special, which was two hours long. The next episode aired on February 9, 2005 “Ultimate Mythbusters” was a head to head competition of Savage vs. Hyneman. The season brought another special episode aired on March 16, 2005 which showed many Mythbusters outtakes. A month later the Mythbusters aired “Mythbusters Revealed” on April 27, 2005. This episode showed how Mythbuster episodes are created.
With the knowledge and assistance from Season 1, 2, and 3. Kari, Tory, and Grant were formed as another group for the Mythbusters, called the build team. The build team was created to do more myths in one episode. Season 4 brought new quality episodes. The first Mythbusters episode in High Definition was aired on December 6, 2006. In addition, this was also a day to celebrate because it was also the Season 4 Christmas Special. As the Mythbusters were becoming more famous, they continued with their silly myths. Such as can a bullet fired straight up in the air kill someone on the way back down, can a room be painted with dynamite, could a kite struck by lightning kill someone, and can pants spontaneously explode?
Season 5 brought double the myths, with the build team assisting to knock down myths. The Mythbusters want to know if the Hindenburg disaster was actually from its paint. They were also having myth specials such as the Pirate special, Baseball special, and Pirates 2. A well known myth from this season was the Underwater Car. In this episode, they wanted to know if you can actually escape from a sinking car. With some testing this was confirmed when you wait for the car to pressurise, the car door will open since it is the same pressure as outside the car. This myth saved a life of a mother and daughter on April 3, 2007 in Saint Martin, Minnesota. Theresa Booth, the mother, went off a road and landed in the water. She began to get her baby as she tried to open the door but it would budge. She then remember what she saw on Mythbusters and waited for the car to have an equal pressure. Finally she tried the door again and it open like nothing. She swam to safety with her infant daughter in her hands. With the knowledge from Mythbusters you can save your own life or other people’s lives.
As more viewers tuned in to Mythbusters, Season 6 brought the Golden Age of the series. This season brought myths such as the 2 hour long James Bond Special, the Lead Balloon myth, the MacGyver Special, the Alaska Special, the Ninja Special, and the Shark Week Special. Some other popular myths were if the NASA Moon landing was real or fake, chosen Youtube viral videos are true or false, or the Hwacha! The Hwacha is a Korean rocket defense cart made in the 1590s to defend themselves from the invasion of Japan.
Season 7 uncovered most of the Mythbuster popularity such as the iconic duct tape making. The Mythbusters always tried to make contraptions out of duct tape like boats, planes, bed, and ropes. Also in the middle of the season, Kari left temporary for maternity leave. This was announced in the episode “Dumpster Diving.” This season was also the first accident on Mythbusters. On March 20, 2009 nearby city windows were shattered by the Mythbusters charging 500 pounds of ANFO explosives.
Season 8 brought more fame and recognition to the Mythbusters. In this season the Mythbusters met the Storm Chasers, Seth Rogen as a Green Hornet Special, and President Obama. This was amazing but the Mythbusters also stuck to what makes them special. They still created episodes on duct tape, explosions, and their Top 25 myths. Near to the end of the season Kari returns from maternity leave.
Season 9 was a look back to what the Mythbusters did. They looked back on their favorite myths and locations to test all of their questions. This season brought up the second accident in Mythbusters history. On December 6, 2011 the build team accidently shot a cannonball through someone’s house leaving a hole. Later the cannonball was found on the homeowner's car.
Season 10 had their iconic myths duct tape, specials, and explosions! This season showed the Duct tape survival island where they tried to survive stranded on an island with only a shipment of duct tape. Another episode was the Explosions A to Z which taught viewers on what kind of explosives they use for testing or just causing chaos.
In Season 11 the Mythbusters rebuilt their first ever myth, the JATO rocket! As the rocket car launched, Season 11 launched with it. This season brought earthquake survival tips, duct tape canyons, breaking bad, zombie specials, and a battle of the Sexes.
As the Mythbusters kicked into 2014, Season 12, it brought more and more specials such as the Star Wars special. Sadly as the season wrapped up with the episode “Plane Boarding”, Adam and Jamie announced this will be Kari, Tory, and Grant’s last episode. This was also the last time the series will use their intro with Kari, Tory, and Grant in it.
With a new and improved Mythbusters, Season 13 started with only Savage and Hyneman. Since it was only Adam and Jamie, they decided to change the shows intro and layout to be more educational, but still chaotic and funny. Most of the season was specials from the Simpsons, Indiana Jones, the A-Team, video games, and Transformers.
As less viewers were tuning in to watch the show, Adam Savage reported that the show will have only one more season. This was announced on October 21, 2015. “Every show has its bell curve. We’re cognizant of our ratings. It’s not like they were terrible but we could see them changing. Three or four years ago we started wondering more if we were going to be renewed. It’s not like it’s unexpected. Still it was kind of amazing that it happened. The thing that really makes me happy is most cable shows like ours just end. They get past their freshness date, you finish a season and then you hear you’ll never see another one. I truly thought that’s the way Mythbusters would end. We’ve been filming the last season this year and we get to send it off. We get to pay homage to this thing that’s changed our lives. Our finale will go out with a bang, as everyone would expect,” said Adam Savage when interviewed by Cinemablend. This was obvious to some viewers since Kari, Tory, and Grant left. “As I heard that Mythbusters was ending I cried mentally because they brought so much entertainment,” said Josh Cruz, Sophomore.
The 14 and final season will be 12 episodes that revolve around Mythbusters. These episodes are the Mythbuster Revealed, The Explosion Special, Tanker Crush, Cooking Chaos, Driven to Destruction, Volunteer Special, Failure is Not an Option, Rocketman, and the Reddit Special. The show will end with a three hour long goodbye. The first conclusion was Duct Tape: The Return. This episode Jamie and Adam created a trebuchet out of duct tape and if duct tape can be used as a seatbelt. Next was the Reunion which was Adam and Jamie talking to the returning original build team. As the clock hit 8:00 on March 5, 2016 the Grand Finale aired. The Grand Finale was a blast to the past..an actual blast. One of the Mythbusters iconic truck ram crashed through props that have been used in the seasons. In this episode, the Mythbusters saluted Buster, the superhero, with a goodbye on a rocket to a concrete wall.
After hearing about the final season and watching its finale, I can say as a fan since I was seven years old watching Mythbusters with my family, the series ended with a great message and goodbye. The Mythbusters have inspired many children around the world to go into the science and engineering fields to discover the myths they haven’t solved. Some episodes have amazed students at the Samueli Academy, “My favorite episode has always been the Star Wars special or any episode with duct tape and explosions,” said Joshua Cruz, Sophomore, “They have inspired me to build stuff out of duct tape like wallet and to create ‘legal’ pyrotechnics.” “I liked how they tried to find out how to solve myths,” said Esmeralda Gallegos, Sophomore.
