From a small island in Barbados Rihanna became one of the most successful female singers. Robyn Rihanna Fenty was born February 20, 1988 in Barbados.
Her mother's name is Monica Fenty. She had a rough childhood, her dad, Ronald Fenty struggled with addictions of alcohol and crack cocaine. Her parents got divorced when she was 14. She would sing to distract herself from her problems at home. Rihanna formed a girl group with 2 other classmates, they decided to audition with music producer Evan Rodgers. He said that Rihanna stood out from the other 2 girls and that she had something special. "The minute Rihanna walked into the room, it was like the other two girls didn't exist," he admitted. When she was only 16 years old she left Barbados to move in with Rogers and his wife in Connecticut and work on recording a demo album meaning she left from home at an early age.
In January 2005 she auditioned for Def Jam Records with Jay- Z in the room and he signed her on the spot. 8 months later she released her first single “Pon de Replay.” 2007 was a big year for Rihanna she transformed from a good girl to a more mature woman. Rihanna also struggled in her personal life because fame doesn't come easy. In 2006 she was the headline in gossip columns, these rumors were that she was having affairs with her mentor Jay-Z. She reacted very well by saying "At first I was like, 'Ha ha, it's funny,'" Rihanna said. "Now I just ignore it and I'm numb to it. You cannot stop people from saying what they want to say." In 2009 she come back as the headline and was the center of the media because of the domestic violence incident with her ex boyfriend Chris Brown. The public reacted in a positive way toward Rihanna and she was very supported by the people. She became a spokesperson against domestic violence. Rhianna said, “This happened to me, it can happen to anyone.” She moved on to Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp, but the pair split ways.
“Her music was mellow and over the years it turned into a more of a island feel,” said Junior Ashley Vargas. Rihanna's songs evolved as well, in 2010 her album “Loud” was a commercial success behind the songs “What’s My Name” and “Only Girl in the World.” During the year 2011, she released her 6th studio album “Talk That Talk.” That album included the song “We Found Love” with Dj Calvin Harris and that song won a Grammy for best short form music video. 2012, Rihanna won her first Grammy for her album Unapologetic. She became the first artist in history to have 100 million singles digitally downloaded and streamed in 2015. In the beginning of this year Rihanna released her album “Anti” featuring the song “Work” with rapper Drake. During her tough times she said, “I put my guard up so hard, I didn't want people to feel bad for me. It was a very vulnerable time in my life, and I refused to let that be the image. I wanted them to see me as, ‘I’m fine, I’m.’ I put that up until it felt real.” With this mindset it's just the beginning of more to come from Rihanna's music.
