A single piece of technology used to take up a whole room but now most devices are portable and fit in our pocket. From the first computer in 1977 to today, both technology and video games have improved greatly. But with all this advancement, there’s a feeling that we’ve lost something too. What if we bring back those fun memories and the struggle of using older technology?
As recently as the 2000's and before, games were a lot of fun like arcade games such as Smash Bros, Pac Man, and Gameboys, DS, etc…. Over many years, video games have also improved greatly from quality, sound, story plot and color where even a character looks so much as if they were real. Now, even games that aren’t that old, are considered old because new games are coming out on a constant and fast basis. For instance, Fortnight, Virtual Reality, Overwatch, Destiny, etc….
”I feel that technology has expanded exponentially. This makes sense because Moore's law states that the advancement in technology is doubled. I also feel that games are evolving too fast as we don't get enough time to try them out. Every year a new version gets made. But later on like Moore's law also states it will slow down later on,” said Justin Pascua a freshman in the Geek Up club who still uses the oldest technology and games he has.
Over many years phones have evolved so much. Picture a huge balke box on a wall with two pieces that you put to your ear and your mouth. That was what phones used to look like. Now take the phone out of your pocket and you notice a big difference between something huge and not as pleasing as the sleek shiny phone now. Even the difference between what they are used for are different. The old phones used to only be used for communication, however now it not only communicate but has games and the internet.
”I believe that iPods/ DS/ Gameboy/ flip phones are a great part of technology because they show how companies started to get into the industry. These devices improved throughout the years and are only becoming better,” said Cynthia Ramirez
In the digital age, we have become increasingly reliant on the new technology that we have. This comes with many pros, such as advancements in medicine and innovation, access to resources, and the ability for instant worldwide communication. But, it also has its downsides.
One downside is that people have become more addicted to technology. Most of the time we take the technology we have for granted. Older technology and video games used to be slow and were not used for many occasions., Now, if we have a generally simple question we can just type the question on the internet and get the answer immediately. Typing was also different back then with typewriters, but now we are at the point where we can do almost anything on our computer that even has a touchscreen.
Cynthia Ramirez says, “It's changed a lot, but for the good because humanity needs it. It's something that we can't live without anymore and improvement is always good,” Because of all the power that this technology gives us, we should appreciate it more.
Unfortunately, we occasionally use it for bad reasons. For instance, we now have to cyberbully, addictive games that are played at the wrong moment, and answer keys for any type of school test. Technology now also causes much of a distraction from things we should be doing with our time and even personal relationships.
Annie Chang says, ”I feel like technology has gotten better throughout the years which can help people, but at the same time destroy because people because people use technology too much and not when it is useful. Technology is used in useful ways though and for important things.”
So maybe appreciate the fact that we have technology almost everywhere we go, just don’t take it for granted. And maybe even get out your old technology and video games and appreciate the fact that they evolve into such powerful technology today.
