Daya is slowly making her away to the top of the music world as a singer, songwriter, & multi-instrumentalist since she released her self-titled début album. She’s already a pretty big music star, even though she is still a teenager like many of you. Many people know of her music, but they don’t really know about her, so here’s her story.
Grace Tandon, also known as Daya, was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on October 24, 1998. Her parents are Christine and Hans Tandon, and she also has four sisters: Rachel, Celia, Marianna, and Avery. Daya She went to Mt. Lebanon High School, and she was a cross-country and distance track runner. She’s finishing up her senior year online, and she’ll be graduating in June.
At the age of three she was already learning how to play the piano, and by the age of eleven she knew how to play the guitar, ukulele, saxophone, and flute. During that same year, she also enrolled to Accelerando Music Conservatory where she met a songwriter and producer by the name of Gino Barletta.
Her career in the music world started in the January of 2015, when Barletta invited her to Los Angeles to work with him, Brett Mclaughlin, Britten Newbill, and Noisecastle lll at Paramount Recording Studios. Her début song, Hide Away was written and recorded during a writing session with them. After that Barletta introduced her to Steve Zap from Z entertainment, and he decided to help promote Daya by forming an independant label with them called ArtBeatz.
If you’re wondering why her name is Daya, you’re not the only one. As she was recording her song, “Hide Away,” her and her team found out that there was another artist named Grace. She decided that she wanted to be different, so she picked the name Daya which means grace in Hindi.
On April 22, 2015 Daya’s single Hide Away was released and she gained support from many famous bloggers. "There is something very special about Daya's voice," said Perez Hilton.
Then on August 21, 2015, she made her début television performance on Today where she sang her single Hide Away. She later released her self-titled EP on September 4, 2015 which included the songs: Hide Away, Thirsty, Sit Still, Look Pretty, Legendary, U12, and Back to Me.
She was able to transform from a normal teenage girl, to a rising pop star, and it doesn’t look like she’s stopping now. “Ever since I was three-years-old, I wanted to immerse myself in music. It showed me who I am, and I get to tell my story of self-discovery in my songs. We really wanted to tell an honest story,” Said Daya, “I want to empower people to recognize their dreams, be able to chase them, and never be afraid of that.”
Some people are inspired and empowered by her songs, and others not so much. Everyone has their own opinion about what they do and don’t like, and some people here from Samueli Academy would like to tell you theirs. “She’s a great singer and she kind of speaks the truth. Also, I think it’s really cool that she’s only 17 because she’s really well-known at a really young age, but it can also be dangerous because she’s exposed to so much,” said Karla Macias, “She’s at an age where she’s still figuring herself out and all the things she might hear could affect her.”
The new 17-year-old music sensation, Daya, isn’t Thirsty for the spotlight even after releasing her self-titled début album. But that doesn’t mean she’s just going to Hide Away, or Sit Still and Look Pretty because she’s slowly rising to the top. Maybe one day she might become Legendary. U12 people might not be impressed, but one day you might find yourself at her concert screaming “Come Back to Me!” as she walks off the stage. So watch out for the young star that’s on her way to the top.
