Have you ever thought of leaving everything and hitting the road? In the story “Into the Wild” by Jon Krakauer we learn about Christopher McCandless’ epic odyssey away from the norm which ultimately costed him his life.
This is the story of a young man who left friends, family, and money behind and went out to explore the country with just the bag on his back. In fact, this is one of the biggest reasons why the story is controversial and thought provoking.
Jon Krakauer retraced the final two years of Christopher McCandless’s life as he traveled from Virginia to places like South Dakota, California, and even parts of Mexico. However, his story has created many questions whether Chris was a lunatic who risked his life or a hero who went against the norms in pursuit of something more. Throughout the book we learn about many people that McCandless met and some of their lives, which brings the book to life. “It really intrigued me because I have never read much non-fiction.” Mrs. Riha said, “I immediately got pulled into the fact that it was a true story and it fascinated me.” The book describes some of the most important events in Chris McCandless’s journey such as losing his car in the deserts of Nevada to meeting meeting Roland Franz in California.
It must be noted that at the beginning of the book Jon Krakauer explained what happened to Christopher McCandless. This might make people not want to read it since they would be expecting a story to unfold as the reader reads on. “I was skeptical about reading it before because I did read Call of the Wild by Jack London and I thought it was going to be very similar, but it’s not,” said Jason Acosta, “It really kept you hooked and captivated while you are reading it.” What readers see throughout the book is not really a narrative but a sort of theme that the author want to show them. The story outlines the question of what people believe peace and happiness really is. As Jason Acosta stated: “I really think it is beyond the superficial definition of happiness.”
What Jon Krakauer has created is a book that questions our everyday life. The book “Into The Wild” not only retells the last two years of Christopher McCandless but questions the way we spend the rest of ours. This book is one that almost every person would enjoy reading and think about there own actions and way of life.
