Bubble nails are the bold --and frankly weird-- trend on Instagram. The look involves placing a ball of acrylic on the center of the nail and building it out from there until there’s a nice curve. The goal is to have your nails pop.
NAILS magazine talked about the nails back in 2009, but it’s not until this summer that it caught on. It’s unlikely they’ll ever gain any real traction, considering the reactions from outsiders and the constant memes that have arisen as a result.
“It’s crazy how people like them,” said Brenda Montes, Junior.“They seem dangerous."
Giselle Cortez, another Junior, described the eccentric nails as “bizarre,” a sentiment everyone in Samueli Academy seemed in consensus about:
“That's a thing? That's a thing?! That's like ewww. What the heck?” said Spiro Basdakis, junior. “They look like elephant feet.”
“That’s so weird. Why?!” said Ms. Ruff. “People have too much time on their hands.”
Outside of school however, there were some positive reactions, like elegantartista (a designer and artist) on Instagram, who said they were “Supercool”. The negative reactions on social media are still overpowering any other reactions. “Absolutely horrendous,” said Lorrain Low on Twitter.
Nonetheless, this is only another one of the weird trends that started by the nail art community, there’s also:
Duck Feet Nails:
Duck nails are, as pictured, meant to copy duck feet with artificial nails to help achieve that dream. “Horrible,” said Marcos Rodriguez, junior.
Claws are elongated fake nails that are whittled at the tips to show sharp animal claws. Most people find these styles weird, if not, completely gross.
These essentially have pointy spikes or studs glued to the nail top for a fiercer look.
Caviar nails-- named after the salt-cured fish-egg dish-- have microbeads applied to the nail so it looks like what you’d imagine your nails would look like after being dipped into a bowl of fish-eggs.
