There have been many Supermen throughout the years, and let’s be honest; everyone has a favorite. But how does the newest, most modern version of the Kryptonian compare to the older versions?
When asked how he prepared for the role, the newest Superman actor, Henry Cavill, said “I was expecting very early mornings, so I’ve got to get up, train in the mornings and then go to work for a 12 hour day. That’s all expected and fine. As far as the sheer scope of it, it’s wonderful. The more the days go on, the more I’m enjoying it.” So he was obviously under a lot of physical strain, but what about mental pressures? Fans were expecting a glorious Superman, and in their eyes, did he deliver? Most fan reviews show that the Superman and Batman supporters are not very happy with the critic’s opinions, as they were not very flattering. However, the fans tend to stand by their convictions, though some believe Superman’s performance to be too gloomy and dark, though they seem to blame it more on the director of the movie, Zack Snyder, than Henry Cavill.
“I just wish that they would get anyone but Zack Snyder to direct. I'm sick of dark, tortured takes on superheroes.” This was a fan review of the movie, or more specifically, the characters. The fan didn’t leave a name, but signed himself/herself as “johnnysee”. It seems as if other fans agree with his/her verdict, since he/she got 189 thumbs up and no thumbs down. Apparently, blaming the director of the movie is pretty common nowadays.
Most of the negative reviews for Batman v Superman come from the critics that were asked for their opinions, but Henry Cavill doesn’t seem to care about the negative response from them. “What is really going to matter, I believe, is what the audience says, because they’re the ones who are buying tickets,” He told Yahoo! Movies UK. The fans’ opinions on the movie and the performances tell a different story. They were completely psyched when the movie came out, and most have made it clear that they were not disappointed. “This is simply amazing. The best movie I've ever seen.” writes fan reviewer “cem ceman”. Of course, same fans, especially the ones that swear by the comics, aren’t so enthusiastic.
"Batman V. Superman is not for comic book fans or critics." This was a post by a fan called “Ryuken 13” and most people agree with him/her. But Henry Cavill was more concerned with the general public’s review of him, and though some found him dark and gloomy, most thought his performance was thought provoking and emotional. All he supposedly wants is for people who watch his performance to genuinely enjoy it, and most of the public seem to.
According to fans, critics and actors, the performance of Henry Cavill differed. Critics reviewed him as “hot” and even “pretty”, though stiff in his deliverance of his lines. Fans thought him to be emotionally compelling and yes, they agree with the critics on his appearance. All in all, there were obviously different opinions on him as Superman. A critic from the Verge said
"Where Brandon Routh’s performance in Returns felt like a sense-memory tribute to Christopher Reeve’s iconic interpretation, Henry Cavill aims for something more troubled and complex.” Brandon Routh and Christopher Reeves have played Superman in earlier movies, and surprisingly, this critic thinks he measures up quite well next to them. Since critics have not been particularly kind to the actors in this movie, this was a rarity among other crippling comments, such as this one.
"Cavill's performance is less memorable for his introspective brooding than for his six-pack. He's handsome and capable, but one can't help missing Christopher Reeve's twinkle. At least he smiled." This review, done by a critic, suggest that Henry’s performance was rigid and slightly unemotional, despite the positive opinions of others. Once again, this review compared his performance to Christopher Reeve’s performance as the same character. Henry Cavill had to shape up and face the mental pressures that come with being judged against other actors that have played the same character as he had, and he still did a pretty good job according to most fan reviews.
Critics and fans face off in a battle of opinions that relate to this classic hero. Some say that the performance was lacking, others thought it was action-filled and moving, but it honestly depends on your movie preferences. They are only opinions, however, and it is only a movie and an actor that they are fighting about. Go see the performance of the newest Superman, and then you may chose a side.
