After watching this, doesn’t it make you want to watch it? The first reaction that I had when I saw this small clip was “OMG MOM!! WE NEED TO GO WATCH PASSENGERS!” A simple one-to-two-minute video with some action scenes and suspenseful music can attract millions of people, which is exactly what it did.
The unfortunate part is that the movie is not as interesting as the one to two minute video. The people who created the trailers left you “breathless,” which is their job to do, but I think they did a better job than the director of the movie. Even though there has been some negativity about the plot of the movie, there are still some fans out there who liked or loved Passengers, starring Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt.
Jim, being the only one awake, is surrounded by a cruise spaceship. With confusion, he wonders what had happened the sleeping chamber to break down. For a year, all he does is watch movies, play extensive video games and drink lonesome at a bar.
After going to his sleeping chamber, he finds a beautiful women, (Lawrence) whom he unconditionally falls in love with. He then finds himself waking her up, so his lonesome days can come to an end. As the typical cliche of the romantic movie, they both immediately fall in love, and blah, blah, blah.
Throughout the movie there are an abundant amount of unfortunate events that they attempt to solve. They eventually risk their lives in order to try to save the rest of the 1,299 passengers, who are sound asleep.
No matter how exciting this movie may sound like, don’t get your hopes up. According to Rotten Tomatoes, the average rating for this movie was a 4.9 out of 10. The moment I sat down in the theater and began to eat my popcorn, my assumptions of this movie were explosions everywhere and, of course, a love story. 20 minutes of the movie passed and no explosions, just a guy in frustration and boredom. 40 minutes, nothing. Just Aurora waking up. 1 hour, the cliche love story starts… I slowly started losing the excitement of the movie and began checking my phone for the time. As the movie is slowly ending, some explosions occur here and there, which brought the excitement back, but later crushes it. Time Out said, “Made with half the budget by a filmmaking team willing to take a few risks, this could have been sharp, sadistic and special. As it is, you’ll be longing for a nice nap yourself by the end.” It was a good nap that I did eventually take.
No matter how dull the movie could be for so many people, there are others who did like it. Sophomore Marieanne Paniagua said the following: “ I really enjoyed it… It was a cute love story.” If you are not into action movies, but you like romantic movies, then this movie is right for you.
Don’t waste your money with a movie that crushes your dreams of it being the “movie of the year” because it is not. Instead, spend your money on something more... entertaining. But it is up to you if you want to lose 1 hour and 56 minutes of your precious life that you will never get back.
