“Christmas is the time of the year when my family and I get to spend time together,” says Nicolas Sanchez, Vice President of the freshman class. For Nicolas, every year is an adventure and brings so much happiness to him. “ We go to the mountains for Christmas,” says Nicolas, “ We decide to do that because we live in Southern California, and we don't get snow in California.” With a big smile on his face Nicolas describes the feeling he gets when he sees snow, “ Sometimes we don't see snow in the mountains, but when we do we really appreciate it.” Although this tradition is new to his family, he looks forward to it every year.
Brisa Garcia, a freshmen, always looks forward to Christmas because it symbolizes something special for her. Her parents are always busy working, but since Christmas is something special for all of them, they make an effort to get out of work early. With immense appreciation Brisa Garcia said, “ My mom usually leaves work early, and then we cook dishes like pozole, hot chocolate, and a bunch of other stuff.” After they feast on the food her family decides to spend some time together by watching some T.V while drinking hot chocolate. “ We basically watch Christmas movies and t.v shows all day, but once it's midnight we unwrap all our christmas present, since it's officially christmas,” mentions Brisa Garcia. Starting this tradition in her family wasn't something that was planned, but for her it's something that she really appreciates and hopes it will continue for a long time.
For many religious people, going to mass a day before Christmas, or on Christmas day, is very important. “ We go to a lot of masses during Christmas, and some of them are a few hours long,” says Catherine Nguyen, a freshmen. She also mentions, “On Christmas we go to our grandma's house and we bring all the food, christmas present, and also we have christmas trees.”
Christmas is about spending time with family and being grateful for what you have. Many people have different ways of celebrating Christmas. These are only a few traditions that can be found across the world. So, this christmas while you're with your family, think about how some people may share the same traditions as you.
