So what do people enjoy about Netflix, and what series or movies do they watch? Janiah Briones, a freshman, enjoys it because she can watch Netflix without ads interrupting all the time. “I got tired of using cable T.V. because of all the ads, so my dad got a Netflix trial and we used Netflix throughout all the time we had the trial, and we didn’t watch cable T.V. once,” she says. Netflix is just an easier and faster tool for entertainment. She enjoys watching American Horror Story, Scream, and Heathers because they are all thrilling and “get your heart rate up.”
All of this is very positive, right? Well, what about the people who don’t think that Netflix is all that great? Grant Wempner, another freshman, believes that Netflix isn’t actually as great as most people describe it to be. He only uses it to watch “Brain Games,” but other than that Netflix is just a waste of his time. He’d rather play his own video games, watch sports, or play basketball than sit down and binge watch. He states, “People who binge watch Netflix series might not sleep as much and become lazy… they won’t feel like doing anything else.” In his opinion, it just gets in people’s ways from doing other things, but obviously not everyone agrees with that.
For those who do enjoy using Netflix, there are so many entertaining movies and shows to watch. Nyree Tramble, the Cheer Coach and Career Counselor at Samueli Academy, recommends “Gilmore Girls” for those who like adorable series. If you’re into more of a fun type of movie, she recommends “Longmire” because it is filled with suspense and it is sort of like a “who-dunit” type of series. “Gilmore Girls is old and then Netflix told me it was now on there, so, of course, I had to watch it all over again, and “Longmire” I just found, and both turned out to be my biggest obsessions,” she states. Other shows to check out include “Stranger Things,” “Fuller House,” and “Lie to Me” because as Gisselle Garcia, a senior says, “All of them are very interesting and are easy to understand… and a lot of different people can watch it.” If you don’t like any of these, there are still so many other options out there.
There are so many great things about Netflix, but is it possible it is getting in people’s ways from doing other things? It affects everyone differently. Emilia Farias, a junior, stated, “It all depends. Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn’t…. it's all your decision, whether you let it distract you or not.” While this is the situation for Emilia, Janiah Briones has it a little different. She still struggles because it causes her to sleep late, due to her procrastinating on her homework. Gisselle Garcia is in the middle of all of this as she states, “Yes, Netflix does get me distracted, but I learned how to handle it, and other people can too.” It just all depends on what type of person you are, it seems.
Netflix has proven to decrease the amount of viewers on cable T.V. This can actually be both positive and negative. Positive, for Netflix, but negative for all the T.V. networks who are suffering from the rise of Netflix, including other streaming-video services. “Netflix caused 50% of U.S. T.V. viewing to drop in 2015,” as found in the website, Variety.com. Many people have admitted to being guilty to this. Nyree Tramble, the Cheer Coach, says that since there are more shows on Netflix she just watches them there rather than on cable television. “…and then eventually it becomes part of a cycle where Netflix has to be watched more..,” she explains. Netflix has almost completely taken over the entertainment scene. It has taken over so much, it is leading people to actually get rid of cable t.v. because of the convenience of Netflix.
As you can see, Netflix has become a huge part of our lives and this also includes the people who don’t enjoy using Netflix, as well. Nowadays, you can can ask anyone about Netflix and they will know what you are talking about, which proves its popularity. By the looks of it Netflix won’t be leaving anytime soon, so pull out a seat and chill.
