Chromebook, X-Block, and learning outcomes are only a few of the many things that make our school different. “Unique and different is the next generation of beautiful,” says Taylor Swift, and that is what our school is.
Samueli is a unique school and we do things differently than other schools. Everyone is friendly and we learn differently. For example, we don’t have Algebra, instead we have IMP 1, 2, and 3, which combines all math.
Our school is especially different because we have a lot more support for our students than the average public school. “We have X Block,” says Brisa Garcia, a freshman, “X-Block is a 45 minute study hall where you do homework and work on projects.” Other schools don’t have this support. We also have tutoring, an after school program that provides students help with their homework. The Aides, staff who are there for you, that help you whenever you need assistance. Also, group work. We are always collaborating with our peers, which allows us to…
We have specific learning outcomes that include Agency, Written Communication, Oral Presentations, Collaboration, and Knowledge and Thinking. The students have learned to adapt to this unique and challenging school culture. For example, Desiree Specht, a freshmen, points out that “all of the students know what agency is. Agency is using effort and practice to grow, building relationships.” Agency is not a foreign concept, and we all apply it in our learning some way or another.
“I’ve been a student here for 3 months and we use the computer a lot, and we get to take it home. In other schools, we have laptops or iPads, but we can’t take them home,” claims Brisa. We are a very privileged school because, as Brisa mentioned, we get to take our laptops home. Other schools don’t have computers for every student to take home. This is because of the quantity of students.
Anna, a staff member, claims, “everything is computer based.” If you are a student at Samueli, then you definitely can agree because we use our Chromebooks in every class, even P.E.! The computer based curriculum is very helpful. It is important because it prepares us to be ready for the events that come after high school, especially due to the fact that computers and technology are a huge part of our generation because it has become more frequently used in the work field.
Our school is unique and we have a lot more unique characteristics that we don’t see until somebody points them out. As thanksgiving rolls around, one thing you should be grateful for is the school you attend, the teachers, and your friends.
