We all know what our Samueli teachers do, but do we know what Ms.Rocio Gomez’s job is? Many of us don’t. Ms.Rocio is the school's counselor, and she works hard everyday to support Samueli Academy students behind the scenes.
“My main role is to make sure that the students have the adequate support and guidance to pursue whatever their goals are,” stated Ms.Rocio. “Whether that's going to a university, a community college, a postsecondary program, or maybe the military.”
As the patient and dedicated counselor that she is, Ms.Rocio keeps tracks of students’ grades and talks to them if the student for some reason is failing a class. Every Samueli student has a story of when Ms. Rocio has looked for them on campus to get them back on track.
During her high school years, Ms.Gomez didn't have the best counselor and was told by her she wasn't going to go to college because people like her didn't make it. “Nobody should be in a school telling people that they can't be who they want to be, so i decided to be a school counselor to be the opposite of her.” said Ms.Rocio.
Ms.Gomez or Rocio as we all know her by, isn't just the school's counselor, she has managed to a establish a personal relationship with students and she has become friends with many of the students she helps: “I think that's why I wanted students to call me by my first name because I think it makes it more personal,” said Ms. Rocio. “I'm here to support a student, I might nagg you here and there but my goal is not to do that.” Ms.Rocio has shown that she truly cares for all of us as she goes out of her way to get us what we need. “I hope that it stays like that, even when you are 30-year-old people if you ever need anything you know you can count on me.”
We want to take the space to give a special “Thank you” to Ms.Rocio for her hard work and dedication, for being there for every single one of the students and for being the guide that we all need.
