Teens admire them, they see their movies, they hear their songs, and they pay money to go see them but how far will someone go to show their “love and admiration” towards a celebrity?
Today more than ever, celebrities play an important role in a teenager’s life. According to a study made by the University of Kansas, teens watch more tv than anything else. When people, especially teenagers, turn on the television, the first thing that they see is someone famous on any program that is being broadcast. It is unhealthy for a teen to grow up watching drastic transformations that these “stars” go through.
The biggest example of a celebrity that has drastically changed has been Miley Cyrus. Cyrus became famous when she appeared as the young double personality pop singer in Hannah Montana in 2004. She had important roles in movies where she always portrayed a young girl who had a passion towards music. After becoming an adult, she left that behind. She is now known as the rude, nasty, bad influence singer. Multiple parents have had to eliminate her from their children's lives. “I was a big fan of Hannah Montana, she disappointed me,” said Nicole Fernandez, junior. Cyrus has been in situations that a celebrity with such big popularity shouldn't be in. She has gone from having that innocent smile and song lyrics to smoking weed on stage and having inappropriate songs.
Justin Bieber doesn't stay behind. He became popular when he was discovered on Youtube. Today, he's a different person. About a year ago, Bieber was arrested and was sent to jail but was later released after paying the bail. He has disrespected his fans by spitting on them from a balcony, canceling his shows for something so small for what a fan would be doing. His popularity grew so much, that this caused fans to create a “love” campaign such as “cut for beiber”, a trend where they would cut themselves to show their love towards him.
We can't leave The Kardashians aside. For so many years Kim Kardashian and her sisters have been famous, but not necessarily for the good reason. Their fortune and popularity have made them do different things that are influencing others to do. Kim Kardashian has done multiple photo shoots for important magazines where she shows a great part of her body. Kylie Jenner, the youngest one, or as better known “the queen of social media”,at the age of 17, she has already been part of multiple plastic surgeries even though she says it's “makeup contouring”. When she turned 18 she gave an interview and said she wasn't against plastic surgery but that she didn't want to go through that now. "As of now, I only have lip fillers," the 18-year-old wrote in her online manifesto. "Like I've said before, it has always been a huge insecurity of mine and I wanted to make a change." Celebrities have caused young girls to think it's something they need to do or change in order to look “better”. It is important for parents and young teens to be aware that it is dangerous. Plastic surgeries at a young age can turn out to be drastic. Many teenagers have been following a new trend called the “ Kylie Jenner challenge” in which they suck their lips into a cup in order to get Jenner’s lips.
It's not a doubt that celebrities influence our daily lives. Its either for beneficial or detrimental. The celebrities highlighted obviously haven't done the right thing. As a community we can not let “stars” take control of our lives like if we were robots. We are the ones who are in control of our lives, no one else.
