Think about what is the first thing you think about ASMR. You might think of it as disgusting while there are people who enjoy it.
ASMR otherwise known as Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response is an online trend that started as a “‘weird sensation feels good’ forum thread started by user okaywhatever at studyhealth.com.” But why is it so entertaining? There are many types of people who view ASMR differently. People either view it as entertaining, annoying or in the middle. It all depends on the viewer and what the viewer likes. Not every person that is part of the ASMR community likes each type of ASMR. ASMR can vary from videos of whispering, storytelling, soap shavings, kinetic sand, slime, chewing, and any other type of idea you have there is everything.
The user ‘Okaywhatever’ explained how the sensation made him feel. Basically stating “examples watching a puppet show and when I was being read a story to. As ASMR started as an interest to very few people, it quickly became a hit on youtube in 2010. Jasmine says she knew about it in 2016 when a very popular YouTuber named Shane Dawson made a video reacting to popular ASMR videos. “I’ve listened to chewing and nail tapping because of Shane Dawson.” Jasmine Vargas This also became introductory to the trend of doing parodies and reaction videos.
ASMRTHECHEW a youtube does only ASMR videos based on the cater to the tingling sensations a person may experience when encountering certain auditory or visual stimuli “The channel has over 150,000 subscribers as of mid-2017 and has accumulated over 30 million views so far. It is able to get an average of 150,000 views per day from different sources.“ says Dr.Ordon ‘ASMRTHECHEW’ one of the many popular ASMR youtubers is famous for her viral trended video named ‘Pickle ASMR Eating Sounds/ BIG Crunch/Intense.’ Exactly what you think this video is about is in the title. The video of 9:00 minutes is all about her eating sounds, big crunch, and intense sounds that bring the attention of viewers. Spirit Payton, otherwise known as ‘Pickle lady’ considers herself “curator of sounds that will heal, comfort and relieve any troubles you may have” as she said once in an interview with Dr.Ordon. Therefore she says she would like to continue doing ASMR videos for her audience.
Many YouTubers like to share different types of videos of ASMR. People enjoy it and sometimes use it as a way to react or enjoy. As there are thousands of people such as Shane Dawson who do videos reacting to silly or ridiculous videos that parody ASMR.
